Renewables Winning the Energy Game? Key Takeaways from Lazard’s 2025 LCOE+ Report

The U.S. energy landscape continues to evolve rapidly, and the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE+) report by Lazard provides powerful insights into the future of energy. Could renewable energy sources such as wind and solar be winning the energy game as opposed to traditional energy sources? Here is what you need to know from the report:

Renewables remain competitive in comparison to traditional energy sources. The annual report produced by Lazard calculates an energy resource's levelized cost, or LCOE, by dividing a project's lifetime energy production by its cost. This year's report concludes that renewables are the "most cost-competitive form of generation," even without subsidies.

Although renewables are increasingly competitive, it is not always that simple. While renewables and storage are winning the cost race, existing fossil fuel plants still play a key role in meeting short-term spikes in electricity demand.

Looking ahead, what we can promise is that renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, are and will continue to be a crucial component in our national energy sector. Not only are they being recognized as the most cost-effective over their lifespans, but also the quickest-to-deploy generation.
