Summer System Maintenance: Keeping Your Panels Performing at Their Best

Summer is the peak season for solar energy production. With longer days and more sunlight, your solar system has the opportunity to generate the most power it will use all year. Proper seasonal maintenance ensures your solar investment operates at maximum capacity when you need it most and can also help to extend your system's life by up to 10 years.

Here’s a practical guide to maintaining your solar system throughout the summer months:

1. Visual Inspections

One of the simplest yet most important maintenance steps you can take during summer is performing a visual inspection of your solar system. Start by checking for general damage to any panels, which could include dirty or cloudy panels, cracks, and or loose components. The harsh conditions of Midwest Winters can be hard on your panels, so be sure when it starts to warm up to inspect the condition of your system.

2. Performance Monitoring

Another great and easy way to assess your system is through performance monitoring. Throughout the summer, during the months with the highest output, it is even more critical to monitor the performance of your system, and through technology, this is made even easier. At Halo, we utilize two different mobile device apps depending on the system, Enphase Enlighten or Solar Edge Monitoring. These monitoring tools show our customers daily, weekly, and monthly generation, which allows you to detect dips or fluctuations in your system.

3. Panel Cleaning

As the seasons change, so do the needs of your panels, and during some seasons it is necessary to safely clean your system. During the summer, it is recommended to gently spray your panels with water in the early morning or late afternoon to clear them of debris such as dust and pollen that could be affecting the efficiency of the system.

Summer is when your solar system has the greatest potential to shine, and while investing in solar is generally low maintenance, it is important to be aware of what you can do to extend the longevity of your system. With just a bit of routine care, such as cleaning your panels, performing visual inspections, and monitoring performance, you can ensure your system operates at full capacity when energy production matters most.
