Agrivoltaics: Pollinator-Habitats with Solar

Spring is a season of renewal, when the flowers bloom, the bees buzz, and the sun starts to shine again. It is also the perfect time to explore the topic of agrivoltaics, the collaboration of green energy and agriculture. One exciting development around agrivoltaics is the combination of solar energy with pollinator-friendly habitats.

According to the Department of Energy, pollinators- such as bees, butterflies and other insects- are crucial to the success of 35 percent of global food crop production. Combining the efforts of clean energy and pollinator-friendly habitats is a new technique for these two fields to coexist. By planting pollinator-friendly plants under and around ground-mounted solar arrays, we can create a habitat that encourages pollinators while also generating solar energy. One example of this in action is on former President Jimmy Carter’s land. Carter was a leading activist for clean energy, being the president to establish the Department of Energy as well as the first to install solar panels on top of the White House. Now in Plains, Georgia, seven acres of his land is dedicated to a solar farm. Here, across the six plots they are testing three different seed and grass mixes to determine the full impact of this pollinator-friendly solar habitat.
